The International Baccalaureate Programme

What Is It?

The IB Programme was established to provide an intellectually rigorous and academically demanding common curriculum for students around the world. Its strengths come from the best of many national education systems. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is an internationally recognized two year comprehensive programme in Grades 11 and 12 encouraging criticual thinking, research skills and service as part of the learning process. The general objectives of the IB Programme are to provide students with a balanced education, to facilitate geographic and cultural mobility, and to promote international understanding through a shared academic experience. The IB Diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise. Completion of the IB Diploma allows students to apply to universities around the world.

Who Should Apply?
The IB Programme will be available free of charge at Sir Winston Churchill to students of all jurisdictions who have the required commitment, ability an interest to devote the time necessary. As well these students must have the motivation and self-discipline required to succeed in this course of study.

A student who is a suitable candidate for the programme demonstrates a strong commitment to learning, both in terms of the mastery of subject and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary for success in a competitive world.

What Will I Learn?
The IB Programme is a two year programme encompassing Grades 11 and 12. It is a comprehensive pre-university course of study. Because this programme is designed to meet the highest standards required by any high school student in the world, it is recognized by leading universities of most countries, and sometimes allows for advanced placement. It provides students with the intellectual, social and critical perspectives necessary for the adult world and fulfils graduation requirements of the Ontario education system.

What Does the IB Programme Offer?
  • Language A - English Language
  • Language B - Second Language (French, Spanish)
  • Experimental Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • The Arts and Electives (Music or the choice of a second course from another group)
  • Mathematics (Math, Computer Science)
  • Individuals and Societies (Geography, History)
  • Extended Essay
  • Theory of Knowledge
  • Creativity, Action, Service


The Pre-IB Programme
At SWC, we also offer the Pre-IB Programme in Grade 9 and 10 to prepare students for the challenges of the senior grades. Students interested in the IB Programme must attend Grades 9 and 10 at Sir Winston Churchill in the Pre-IB Programme, which is enriched and accelerated to prepare students for the rigours of the Diploma years. Students take a more challenging version of the courses in the regular programme with the emphasis on organization and time-management skills. In addition, students learn concepts unique to the IB Programme.

2002 Results
The first graduation class of the IB Programme wrote their international exams in May of 2002. These students scored significantly higher than the world average in the subjects they studied. This first graduating class of 16 Diploma candidates and 7 Certificate students received over $163 000 in entrance scholarships at the 2002 graduation ceremony. In addition, most diploma students received advanced standing in at least one first year university course, while several students were granted three credits.
